MAN
OF THE MATCH
Personally, this is the toughest category for me to have
to choose a name because there are several games when
almost every lad on the pitch shines. However, there is
usually one lad that stands out above all others which I fondly
call, "MOTM."

2009
Outdoor OSL Provincial Season
FINAL 2009 MOTM
Matchday 14 @
Vaughan Shooters, Sun Aug 09 09, Loss, 3-7
Jeremy Brown

It's the
final game of 2009 and it could not be more fitting.
This is a classic ending for a young man who has
persevered it all and even in this match he was not a
100%. He played injured.....BUT HE PLAYED and that my
friends, is real heart from a real lad. Jere just
finished up his final season with us due to the age
ineligibility rule. He has been here from day one and
has been through it all with this franchise. Jere has
been a stay-home back four defender and could always
been seen in the back right corner. With that said, on
this night he was implemented up front in the dying
moments and he made a meal out of it. It almost looked
like Hampton's Jere and Dudar were strutting their stuff in World
Cup at the Uppers. J. Brown has scored some dandy goals
during scrimmaging and we all know he has a cracker of a
shot and his clinic finish has excited all of us during
training sessions. It was an emotional moment for me as
I watched on as one of my unsung heroes pulled the
trigger scoring his first-ever Darlington FC goal. This
was Jere's swan song and he went out with all the glory.
A small smattering of away supporters let out a cry as
Brown scored, but one particular onlooker had a real
tear and a real cry as her Jeremy was her Jazzy. These
next few words have just made my year as I holler out in
CAPITAL LETTERS, Jeremy Brown is this game's, "MOTM."
Matchday 13 @
Vaughan Azzurri, Sun Aug 02 09, Draw, 0-0
Joey
Azzarello

He's another
one of our unsung heroes that has been doing it all year
long.....actually, ever since he's donned the Darlington
Blue for as long as I can remember. Azza is a class act
and comes to the Hydros having the longest drive out of
everyone and is always the first one at all the games
and practices and the last one to leave. The real
impressive thing is he always makes sure I am sorted and
ready to head out before he worries about himself. He's
a big away from the pitch as he is on the pitch and
that's saying something as he has been an enormous
presence on the pitch and tonight was no exception. He
works the midfield and plays as a link man better than
any other. Joey has incredible footwork and
extraordinary vision on the pitch. Tonight he lead the
team with intensity and grit and believe me, it was a
night where both were required. He maintained his
composure, yet, orchestrated his leadership through
aggressiveness and hard-nosed footy. Azza did something
tonight he does every single night.....he came to play
and played as hard as anyone. On this night in Vaughan,
he walked the honourable mention as, "MOTM."
Matchday 12 @
Hearts Azzurri @ The Hydros, Tues July 28 09, Loss, 2-5
Brian
Santos

This Cinderella
story just continues to get better and better as the
season winds down. Brian Santos has been doing it game
in and game out and again this past night at the Hydros
he was certainly one of the bright stars on a night that
once again fell short in the end. The lads went down by
three goals and Santos took it upon himself to start
pushing forward and when the match was over he once
again controlled the midfield and played a solid 90
minutes and scored both Darlington goals. He plays
with a real edge about him and leads by example by
getting business taken care of on the pitch. He has
scored 5 of the last 7 Darlington goals and is usually
the third man in on most others that he sets up. He's
walking away with the team leading point getter and
already has the most goals sown up. He sits just one
goal behind the league's leading goal scorer for the
prestigious OSL Golden Boot Award and certainly will get
serious mention when it comes to 2009 Darlington MVP
choices. I can go on and on and on about Brian's
contributions towards making this team a serious
contender but it is the same stuff this rookie has been
doing from day one. Again, I will state he is a rookie
and if this lad does not end up somewhere in a serious
playing capacity in the future then someone is missing
out on some legendary leadership. Brian Santos just
earned his 4th shout-out as "MOTM."
Matchday 11 @
Scarborough Strikers, Fri July 24 09, Win, 3-0
Brandon
Weigel

Fezz walked
his second nod as MOTM. This was just another typical
Brandon Weigel performance. Fezz left it all on the
pitch for the full 90 minutes. He stopped all attackers
and wandering Scarborough souls who attempted any type
of sniffs around Mikey. Fezz was an intricate cog in the
wheel backboning the Darlington attack on this night.
He lead the way setting up the opening 2 goals via two
astonishing crosses. Fezz also had a couple of
opportunities just missing the target. Our well-rounded,
gifted, attacking defender lead by example tonight
justifiably awarding him another shout-out as "MOTM."
Matchday 10 vs
Armour Heights @ The Hydros, Tues July 14 09, Loss, 0-3
Mike
Sukovski

It's Mikey's second
nod as the game's MVP and just like the last time he
owned the game and earned the recognition. I don't even
know where or when to start describing and explaining
his many saves upon saves upon saves. Mikey walked the
lads onto the pitch and lead by true example for the
full compliment and to think he did this and whole lot
more at less than a 100%. We have a massacred squad at
the moment as injuries have been running rampant but
Sukovski has put his ailing areas aside and sucked it up
in classic Mikey fashion. Mike's kicks were as good as
any I have witnessed before. He was tremendous in all
areas in the cage. Mike Sukovski stood out heads above
all others on this night and could not be blamed for any
of the balls passing by him, including a penalty from
the spot. It truly is a sad scenario for Mikey as of
late as he went from the League leading stat slayer but
the unfortunate team trauma has bloated his numbers and
grossly groped his goals against. Amidst all the
ugliness and unknown of late, Mikey still emerges above
it all and comes back with one of the best goal keeping
clinics I have seen in years. He has been in for all
three of the recent setback games and not looked any
better after it all and that is the make-up of a true
champion. Mike Sukovski was this game's "MOTM."
Matchday 9 @ North
Toronto, Sun July 05 09, Loss, 2-3
Brian
Santos

It's getting a bit
ridiculous how this kid is carrying the team! Can
someone please take him aside and remind him that he is
a rookie and never played in the OSL before. Oh my
goodness, he can't even get into a bar yet? He just
collected his 3rd MOTM honour in just 9 matches. He
leads the team in overall points and he has to be an
early front-runner for the season's MVP. He scored 2
more goals tonight and that was once again, with a limited
amount of bodies wearing the same kit. He has been doing
this all season long but more impressively, he has
really kicked his game into a serious mode since having
to take ownership for the midfield and the lack of
numbers. This afternoon Santos did more of the same
running himself ragged at both ends of the pitch, yet
maintaining a disciplined and controlled game.
Brian brought it hard for the entire game and that
really is impressive considering he was battered and
banged at for both halves. Every time I looked up he was
being smashed to the ground but in classic Santos style,
he just picked himself up and dished it right back.
Brian carried the team again tonight which is why he is
carrying home another, "MOTM."
Matchday 8 @ Sora
Sun Devils, Fri July 03 09, Loss, 0-6
Jonathon
Austin

On a night
when I was quite frankly disappointed in the
team it was the awe-aspiring rookie sensation Jonathon
Austin that would keep me balanced and appreciative that
lads like Austin still appreciated the grass roots of
this lovely game of ours. It all started about 24 hours
before opening kick-off when the phone calls and emails
starting coming in. Lads were unavailable, unfit,
unsure, uninterested, unstable and just simply
unreliable. We kicked off the Friday night laugher with
9 men and many of them were not fit to go but what
choice did we have at this point? It was a night of
total disaster but amidst all the ugliness there were
glimpses of hope and heroics and Jonathon Austin lead
the charge. Our rookie Netminder suited up and took to
the pitch and was willing and able to be implemented
wherever we saw fit. Wow, what a play on words that was on a night that featured none of the
above.....willing and able.....How ironic? Jonathon was
stupendous. Austin had a mammoth match. He was colossal
at the back taking on all attackers never backing down
from anyone. He read the play and made all the right
moves at all the right times. Jonathon was even put up
on the left flank for a spell and even up front he was
superlative. As a matter of fact the Sora Keeper was
called upon to make three outstanding saves for the
entire 90 minutes and it would be Austin that served up
the best attempt. Jonathon took a solid strike at the
Keeps and he had to make a diving save to keep the
football out of the net. Jonathon backboned the team
tonight and it was not from the cage in the back but up
on the front lines in the trenches and it's a crying
shame he had very few "Brothers In Arms" on a night that
really could have used a few more men.
Jonathon Austin was a man with a mission and on this
night, "MOTM," was his accomplished and capable
assignment.
Matchday 7 vs
Vaughan Shooters @ Clarington Fields, Tues June 23 09,
Win, 3-0
Brian
Santos

It is quite
influential and doesn't happen often but what is even
more impressive is the fact that this lad has been given
the MOTM nod twice in just 7 fixtures. Santos was on
fire tonight. He played an astounding match of football.
He held down the middle of the pitch with his dynamic
partner in crime, Dustin Dinis (who by the way could
have easily won this shout-out tonight for his second
time as well). Dinis and Santos were towering and
tenacious in their performances. Santos shut the entire
Vaughan passage routes down and ended any type of threat
before it could mount to anything serious. At times the
Vaughan team just did not know how to penetrate our end
of the pitch. Santos was everywhere clogging up their
openings and then creating space for himself as he
kicked off many of our attacks in the transition game.
Brian fed countless FC lads with precise and prime
passes. He set up two goals and was the third man in on
many other attempts. Captain Frank has been missing in
action for back to back games now and Santos has really
kicked his footy up a notch with 2 helpers and one of
the main reasons this team has a huge zero in the goals
against department over the fortnight. Hails and hurrahs
in foreign Portuguese tongue echoed across the
Clarington stands last night and I am sure those were
Santos praises coming from family and friends chanting "grandeza."
He was great, he was grand, he was AGAIN, this game's, "MOTM."
Matchday 6 vs
Vaughan Azzurri @ The Hydros, Tues June 16 09, Draw, 0-0
Jordan
Sutherland

He's been
playing some of the most attractive football of his
rookie campaign over these last few games and tonight
he did more of the same earning the big shout-out on the
night and making sure the great performance was punched
in before he was punched out. Jord was shown the RED in
the closing moments of tonight's match and no one was
more shocked at this than yours truly. I sat on the
bench laughing in hysterics. What a joke! What a bloody
joke! More about this shocking RED in the Last Game Tab
as I'm not wasting good ink on a great performance and
diminishing it with that silly business. Jordan
controlled the right flank with his first touches and
strong second efforts all night long. He sent in
luxurious lobs. He switched, swirled and shifted
spectacular balls from the right touchline over to the
left. He dropped back into the defensive zone paying
respects to his "D." He made numerous brilliant passes
and plays during the first half which was a huge reason
why we kept the possession and play for over 80% of the
45 minutes. Our rookie sensation did it all tonight
which is why Sutherland was this game's, "MOTM."
Matchday 5 vs Sora
Sun Devils @ The Hydros, Tues June 09 09, Win, 2-1
Mike
Sukovski

What a night! And
well deserved for our back-stopper who is playing in his
final year at U-21 and to go out on top of his game can
only benefit all of us. Tonight was a glimpse of what
can be expected for the balance of the season. Mikey has
played 3 games thus far and one goal has crossed his
line and his stingy 0.33 GAA and 3-0 record backs up the
very reason why he earned the shout-out nod tonight.
It's becoming a familiar sight as he drop kicks balls
into FC paths placing the football right at their feet
while in stride. He's a strong presence in all attacks
and did more of the same on this night at the Hydros.
Mikey had cat-like reflexes and was called upon to use
them all night long. He made many game-savers including
a stunning free kick save (which is hailed about in the
POTG tab). Sukovski's name comes up all over last
night's praises which is why it was a no-brainer calling
him this game's, "MOTM."
Matchday 4 @ Hearts
Azzurri, Sun June 07 09, Loss, 1-2
Dustin
Dinis

I know the
future of this team is in fine shape when the MOTM
selection has been a rookie sensation twice in four
games. Tonight was another one of those rookie
sensations and this lad has been sidelined for the most
part and has already contributed and pinched in
ten-fold. Dustin Dinis looked in mid season form from
Day One in early Spring Training Sessions when the rain
was mixed with snow. He came to play from day one but
an ailing injury has burdened this anxious lad but not
diminished his determination and dedication. Dusty was
the key contributor that linked the midfield to the
strikers and he orchestrated almost every push forward
via his clever through balls and brilliant footwork.
Dusty is the ultimate team player but make no
mistakes.....this rowdy rookie can take a chance and
turn it into a threat on the net. He has clinic finish
which is why he can be implemented into the shape
anywhere from the defensive midfield right up tucked in
behind the opponents last defender. Tonight dancing
Dusty displayed and dazzled his talents and like he does
every time out, he gave a 110% even on the shorter end
of the outcome. Esther Shiner is home to The Hearts but
Darlington FC has just as much heart in Dustin Dinis as
he earned this game's, "MOTM."
Matchday 3 vs Scar.
Strikers @ The Hydros, Tues Jnne 02 09, Win, 2-0
Brian
Santos

I just love rookie
sensations. I love under-agers who carry their weight
with the rest of the lads. This is a lad I somehow feel
I will be revisiting a few more times before this
campaign is over. Brian Santos was extraordinary
tonight. He was everywhere throughout that midfield and
put on a real show with his twirls and head fakes.
Santos was a true Midfield General out there tonight and
his vision at reading the pitch was astonishing.
Santos and Frank compliment each other and until the "W"
gets totally tweaked to our liking, well unfortunately,
these two will continue to cover much of the midfield on
their own. Santos went in hard on all tackles and very
seldom came out without the football. I could hear his
directions and commands across the pitch as he projected
himself like a true leader. There was absolutely nothing
rookie or new about this outstanding performance which
is the very reason why Brian Santos was this game's, "MOTM."
Matchday 2 @ Armour
Heights, Sun May 31 09, Win, 2-1
Zachary
Meyerowitz

Zach jumped on
board the FC squad last season well into the campaign
and really never found his proper form as he arrived at
a time when the squad was already in mid season form. As
the season wound down I kept thinking to myself that we
had not seen the real Zach Meyerowitz yet? Well guess
what folks? The real deal Witzi has returned this season
and this is exactly what I thought we were getting when
we signed this ultimate utility man. This kid can be
implemented almost anywhere on the pitch and play as if
he had been there forever. Tonight, with the absence of
back corner man Elkinson, the back line lagged just a
tad. Versatile Meyerowitz jumped into the back corner
and played his heart out. He sent lobs, switches and
through balls up the pitch all night long. He pinched in
on the odd attack and maintained his defensive guard
letting no stragglers by. Witzi figured in on the game
winner acting as the anchorman on the play initiating
and orchestrating the attack via a luscious lob up the
line. He always has everyone's back and tonight he was
back in the back earning him the nod as "MOTM."
Matchday 1 vs North
Toronto @ The Hydros, Tues May 26 09, Win, 6-0
Brandon
Weigel

What a tough
call it was tonight and the candidates were not the lads
one would think were in the running for this
home and season opener. Bradley Rose registered 3 points
on the night with some phenomenal helpers. It was "Hammertime"
in a big way while he was on the pitch. The entire "W"
both starters and bench depth were magnificent and
deserved honourable mentions. However, on this night it
would be the unsung heroes at the back that all could
have easily walked this nod. Jere started and played
hard and then his substitute Age came in and worked
effectively scoring the final marker. Killz sent in
crosses, switches and through balls that just kept on
getting better as the night went on earning him a huge
assist and the "Barber" cut, trimmed, snipped, and tore
down all those who even dared enter Sukovski's domain.
Maiorano was superb holding down the back line letting
no one sit in the chair for more than a trim. With all
this said, it would be Brandon "Fezz" Weigel that would
get the nod on this night. Fezz was just simply Fezz and
anyone who has been around these parts knows full well
what that usually means. He stops all those who try to
penetrate the back line. He pinches in with gallant
gallops up the flank. His hops put LeBron to shame as he
gets up on everything. Tonight Fezz worked overtime
covering the entire pitch helping his fellow backs and
Mikey Sukovski earn their first of a possible many more
to come, clean sheets. Brandon Weigel is the 2009 first
"MOTM."

Antoine Paul

Wow! I could
easily just wrap up one big shout-out for all 10 men
tonight and even more so, just the 9 for the entire
first half. With that said, there were 3-4 unbelievable
efforts tonight and then two that were magnificent and
then there was Twon. Twon was everywhere tonight. He
coovred more ground than the 747's that were flying
overhead. At times I think he was even spotted dancing
with his homies across the way with the metal drums.
Anyway, he was playing his heart out at both ends of the
pitch tonight and never once getting caught up the
pitch. He just always seemed to be there and then would
be the man to make the play. I can go on and on about
this performance but in all honesty, everyone of these
lads took it huge in the loss tonight and gave more than
any coach could ever ask from any player. Antoine Paul
was a true leader and a true warrior on this night which
is why he was this game's, "MOTM."

Chris Newell

He's a rookie
and in his debut season on this team and at this level
of play and one would never know it the way this
sensation has brought it the entire year. Chris Newell
is always pencilled in on my game notes for either the
POTG or MOTM or some magical highlight of the night
every time we play. He's one of the unsung heroes on
this team and to think he's meant to be getting his feet
wet. One would have to assume this part-time lifeguard
has been swimming in the deep end for quite some time
now. On this night Chrissy played a stellar game of
football up and down his wing. I lost count of how many
times he saved our bacon with balls along the touchline.
His speed and stamina kept an evil watch up and down the
flank and many times his genuine gallop beat defenders
and usually ended in one of his switches into the box. A
ferocious header at the Scarborough keeper handcuffed
the netminder which resulted in a spill over setting up
the equalizer on the night. Big Chrissy was clearly the
cream of the crop tonight and really is becoming the FC
architect on the FC flanks. Chris Newell was this
game's, MOTM."

Mark
Del Vecchio

The back line
has been picked, poked, prodded and basically taken
apart over and over these past few weeks and tonight was
no exception. Two starting defenders were absent and the
most likely stand in was also missing in action so
others were implemented back there. However, the biggest
change in the back line tonight would be the Mark Del
Vecchio shift into the centre spot with Antoine. Del has
been holding down our back line game in and game out for
years now and has never been sighted in the dead centre.
And why I will never know as he was awesome in that role
tonight? Del delivered time and time again. He read the
game like a book. He never let anyone pass and as a
matter of fact, at times, resembled veteran and MVP
alumni Devon Potter who we all know was the Darlington
sweeper extraordinaire. Del Vecchio was solid as a rock
back there which also allowed Antoine to roam freely.
And like always, Del's passes and crosses were bang on
finding blue shirts every time. It was a real pleasure
watching the veteran having fun back there and it's
games like tonight I want to remember him playing in as
his days are numbered as he's in his swan song season.

David Dudar

David Dudar
seen here training hard at the Upper Hydros and practice
makes perfect and on this night vs Supra, he was
magnificent.
David Dudar
is certainly
one of the bright spots on the
year as the newcomer has always
played his heart out and
trained even that much harder. He trains like no other
and the lads are always commenting on his ferocious
shots and strikes during our Upper Hydro sessions. For
some unknown reason and maybe it's just a matter of
taking a bit of the edge of his game, he just falls
short on game night and again, it's just a fine
adjustment that is required and on this night, those
adjustments were indeed calibrated. Whatever the
slightest of reasons are, he certainly got it all
figured out on this night as he went in late but came up
quick and big with two dramatic goals. David scored a
cheeky chip and followed up with a hard drive to the
bottom corner for his curtain call. He played a strong
game in the Supra end and still managed to check back
and help out in the transition game. It was David
Dudar's finest performance to date and something tells
me we have just seen a small glimpse of big things to
come from dandy David. Dudar was this game's, "MOTM."

Stephen "Spidey" Phillips

It was dark
and gloomy just before the lights came on but this
keeper's thoughts and intentions never could have been
brighter and clearer.
It takes a
massive and mature man to call himself out like
Spiderman did last game and I cannot think of a better
way to redeem one self than turning around in your next
game out and owning the Man Of The Match nod and the
Play Of The Game.....that's what Stephen "Spidey"
Phillips did all on his own. Spide had a huge game
tonight. He was solid in the cage and made extraordinary
save after extraordinary save. Point blanks, hard
drives, ridiculous reflexes and suicide rushes towards
Azzurri strikers coming in a mach speed were all the
reasons why Stephen kept his lads in the game. At one
point in the second half within a 5 minute span he came
out and crushed two different attackers with his bulky
frame and intimidating presence. The very next Azzurri
advance found timid attackers cautious and aware. Spidey
was the true leader on this night and it brings back
nothing but great memories for me as I have seen this
scenario just a few times before. Spiderman was this
game's, "MOTM."

Shaw

He just
played in his 6th game as an FC lad and the fact that he
just registered his 2nd MOTM nod tells you exactly why
this larger-than-life Western kid has been more than
what we would have settled for. Rooney is an impact
player and gives a 110% whenever he is on the pitch and
wherever he gets implemented for that matter. And
tonight was no exception to that rule as I threw him up
front in the closing moments of the game and he spoiled
the Hearts Azzurri clean sheet by scoring the lone FC
marker on the night. Rooney continues to impress
everyone this season and now if he can just fight off
the urge to lock his keys in his car this coming
Saturday night then maybe he will put in another fine
performance at Supra. The B.C. Prince George native,
Joseph Stuart Shaw, was this game's, "MOTM."

I knew the
second I laid eyes on him we had a gem here. Tonight was
really the first time I was able to implement him where
he rightly deserves to be and what a night it was for
the newcomer. Rooney was magnificent on the pitch. I can
see exactly how he is going to fit in to the big picture
and to think we have strengthened the midfield must be a
threat to any team in the OSL. Tonight Rooney read the
game as well as anyone on the pitch. He anticipated and
visualized everything as it was unfolding. He opened up
space around him and sent an enormous amount of terrific
balls through holes and up into the paths of Swanny and
Rose. His speed and skilled pace with the football at
his feet is an asset up the flank. Rooney also tucked in
at the back and always positioned himself behind the
ball when defending. That stint in the back line has
improved this natural middy ten-fold which is why his
new place on this team will not be the last time we see
him walk, "MOTM."

He's been on

Tonight Swanny played a strong game in the losing cause

Many of our
FC lads are just now at this minute coming around and
their level of play is starting to resemble that of mid
season form. Tyler Swan has been in that mode for weeks
now. This firecracker is setting off sparks and signals
on a daily basis. Game in and game out he keeps on
playing a huge factor in all the outcomes. Over the past
3 games our lads have scored an impressive total of 8
goals. Swanny has figured in on all 8 of those goals
scoring 4 and registering 4 helpers. This is remarkable
and he has to be the reason why this team is still
unbeaten heading into July. On this night it was more of
the same from our Captain as he assisted on the opening
3 goals then found room for a bit of afters with a
generous helping of "sugar on top pretty please" scoring
goal number four. Swanny was the real deal tonight as he
completely earned the "MOTM."

Antoine Paul

Antoine has
been a brick at the back thus far this season. He has
stopped everything that dares to enter his domain and he
has been equally as strong in the offensive zone on the
attacks. Once again tonight he figured in on many rushes
forward and made sure his special "rock and roll" "twist
and tumble"
throw-ins were in good order. He threw in from the
touchline on several occasions and every time, his
dangerous launches were a threat at scoring. His
offensive prowess earned him a crucial helper on
Swanny's marker. With all this said, it was his
defensive demands that he puts on himself that would
make him stand out on this night. And all this on a
night when newcomer Joe Rooney and veteran Del Vecchio
had their best games of the season. Antoine just seemed
to always be there cleaning and picking up the garbage
left behind in front of Spidey. Twon was explosive at
both ends of the pitch for the full complement which is
why he deserves this game's, "MOTM."

Daniel Frankel

Quite "Frankley"
he's been leading the team thus far this season. He
finished up with a ferocious finish last season and just
came off of bragging rights as the number 2 cheese in
the country via Uni ball. He's getting better with every
game and once again tonight he played a thrilling game
on the road proving he does not care where he is.....he
continually keeps up his pace and pounding. He was
knocked around again tonight but just kept picking
himself up and dishing right back at them. He was
dominate throughout the middle of the pitch again and
his distribution of the football is extraordinary. At
one point he went down via a hard head knock with the
Vaughan keeps and most lads would patch up and get
off.....not Captain Frank. He continues to conquer and
control and on a night like this it really did appear to
be more like a battlefield and our General called the
shots in a 2-2 road tilt. And just to add more quality
points to why this lad is as big off the pitch as on. I
stumbled in my door last evening (this morning) at some
God awful time after my trials and tribulations and who
has the first email waiting for me to read? Daniel
Frankel says, "Hey Nick, sorry about tonight man...this
is not right.....are you okay?" I placed the mouse on my
desk, wiped a tear from my eye and then realized why I
do what I do. On this night, my Daniel, was my first
choice, as the "MOTM."
Regular
Season Match 3 @ Vaughan Azzurri, Sun June 01 08, Win,
5-2
Tyler Swan

He's the
all-time leading point getter for this franchise and is
on another ridiculous pace again this year as he
registered another 3 points this past night giving him 7
points after just 3 games. Swanny is on a tear and
there's no stopping him. He came back to us this Spring
in the best shape of his career and it has paid
dividends immediately. He has a jump and a jolt to his
game now that finds the little agitator all over the
pitch. He's a striker who sets up office in and around
the 18 and keeper box. With that said, he's always
behind the ball when we are defending and he pinches in
on the defensive end of things all the time. Swanny has
been coming back and leading the attack with the middies
on a regular basis which is why his helpers out-number
his markers. Tonight was no exception as he covered as
much ground as any one on the pitch for the full 90
minutes. He set up Bradley and Joey and finished one for
himself. It was a superb night in Vaughan for Swanny and
let's hope we see more of that in Vaughan against the
cross town rivals a week Sunday. It was another
thrilling performance from our Captain which is why he
was this game's, "MOTM."
Regular
Season Match 2 @ Hearts Azzurri, Sun May 25 08, Win, 3-0
Joey
Azzarello

Azza, just
kept picking himself right back up, time after time.
Azza and
myself had a brief conversation before the kick-off this
past evening and I reminded him that even though we had
no bench and only 11 men I wanted him off the second he
needed H2O or any kind of relief or rest. This lad has
not been well to say the least including a stop at the
pharmacy even on the way to the match. And on top of all
that, he sustained a knock the past game that would have
sidelined any Pitbull. He lead the team with commands
and direction for both halves. He always seemed to be on
the football every time I looked up. Again for the
second consecutive game in a row he took knocks and
bangs that would have sent BJ Penn out of the Octagon.
He covered a lot of ground through the middle of the
pitch and pinched in on many attacks including a
sensational cross setting up the final tally on the
night earning his first point on the season and as he
said in his own words as he darted off the pitch at the
closing whistle. He ran straight up to me like a little
child expecting that pellet gun on Christmas morning and
exclaimed, "Nick, this is my second year as a Darlington
player and that was my first win ever!" (this story will
be shared with others at some other time.....far too
much pain for this happy moment). I reached out to swat
him after that remark but he moved, giggled and gave me
that Azza smirk that reminded me why it's impossible not
to love this kid. What a class act leader and on this
night, the winner of this game's, "MOTM."
2008
Home & Season Opener
Regular
Season Match 1 vs Armour Heights, Thurs May 22 08, Draw,
2-2
David Almeida

He's scored a
goal in both pre-season tilts and now has kept his
perfect goal per game up by netting yet another one for
his FC. It wasn't David's marker that made him such a
threat on this night, but his never-say-die mentality
and unprecedented work ethics. David was all over the
pitch and I mean literally as he began the opening half
playing his regular midfield spot chipping in and
pushing forward on every advance and then he was asked
to serve the second period in the back line where he
played for me back in the Darlington 88 days. Almeida
was unstoppable on this night as he held the fort down
in the closing minutes while he limped and lagged due to
muscle spasms and strains. David fought hard for the
entire 90 plus minutes when most athletic specimens
would probably sustain about half that pace under the
circumstances. Almeida put forth an enormous effort on
this night earning him the regular season's first "MOTM."

Pre-Season/Friendly/Exhibition Play
Friendly vs
Darlington U-18, Thurs May 15 08, Win 2-1
Spidey Phillips

After being
given Swanny's $20 winnings from last night's "World
Cup" heroics to Spidey for his awesome netminding
prowess, this birthday boy went out and kicked back with
his family. A late arriving birthday gift came in the
shape of a "MOTM" nod on this night as he showed the
U-18 squad why he is last man standing for the senior
circuit in town. Tonight at the new digs in behind the
Bowmanville Indoor Facility, Phillips made save after
save including a first half game-saver (see POTG tab)
and no less than 3 other crucial clutches and grabs in
the second half. Stephen was solid in the cage directing
and dictating orders and commands up to his lads. It was
this fine performance that would earn the big backbone
this Friendly's "MOTM."
Friendly vs
Men's Rep Maple Grove, Tues May 13 08, Win, 7-3
Bradley Rose

As each and
every day went by at the starting of May we were getting
closer and closer to opening season and it was another
day waiting with anticipation of what would eventually
come to fruition. The guessing game had ended and
Bradley Rose still had jet leg after practicing just
once with our FC and still found strength and stamina to
score a hat-trick and add two more helpers in a 5-point
production. It was a phenomenal outing from the Yale
University sniper that would lead his new Darlington
digs to a 7-3 romp over the area's top finalists from
the local Men's Rep League this past year. Rose twisted
and turned in and out of 18 yard chaos making goal after
goal and setting up almost as many. He demonstrated
dazzling foot work and exploded into sprints and bursts
leaving all opposition in his wake. Rose showed calmness
and composure while under extreme pressure from (at
times) 2-3 Maple Grove lads gunning at the fancy
footballer. Bradley has not even finished unpacking his
bags and he has already captured the season's first solo
shout-out and something tells me this will not be his
last, "MOTM."
"Be safe &
come back to me in one piece."

2007 Season
League Game
#13 @ Vaughan Azzurri, Sun Aug 12 07, Win, 6-1
Tyler Swan

I think
Georgie Best himself would have come down from the
Football Heavens and given me a proper once over if I
didn't at least nominate this lad tonight for what he
has done over the past few games. Swanny has been on a
scoring frenzy of late and his penetrating pace has put
him second overall in the OSL standings. Our FC lads
have netted no less than 16 goals over the past 3 games
and Tye has scored 7 of those while setting up another 3
giving him a staggering 10 points in 3 games. This kid
is sizzling hot. I can't even begin to imagine his goal
total if we would have structured him in the front lines
from day one? Tonight in Vaughan he scored a natural
hat-trick in the second half after registering his first
on the night at the end of the opening frame. He "Tyed"
one on tonight winding down the season with a real
"Swan" song for all to remember. It was this
electrifying effort and sensational story that would
earn Swanny his 2nd nod as "MOTM."
League Game
#12 @ Toronto Supra, Thurs Aug 09 07, Win, 6-1
Mark
Del Vecchio

Our latest
and newest FC addition is so new that the ink on his
signature in his 2007 FC Player Book is still wet. As a
matter of fact in all fairness this is really his first
proper stint on the pitch as an FC starter as he kicked
off the game and came out in the closing moments and
even then, he was dearly missed in the back right
corner. Mark played a magnificent game in the back right
corner earning the duties and responsibilities as one of
the FC back four. Mark is a big solid defender with
agility and sheer strength and these characteristics
matched up with his quick thinking and keen sense at
reading the game, will make this newcomer and welcomed
stay home back. It was the drive home afterwards when
the lads were bantering in the back of the van and it
was a few of the lads that mentioned Mark's perfect
passes through the holes and open spaces that made him
such a standout on the night. I agreed with all of the
above. Also, he has excellent vision and timing as to
where and when the play will unfold and run its course.
Del Vecchio was outstanding in his first real test at
the back and it was his impressive stand-up back four
technician style that earned him his first ever,
Darlington FC Provincial's, "MOTM."
League Game
#11 vs Hearts Azzurri, Tues Aug 07 07, Draw, 4-4
Korey Brown

He showed up
after the team warm-up as he ran in by his shirt-tails
coming directly from work. He wasn't supposed to leave
work until 9pm which was kick-off but he was here on the
bench going through his own rendition of warming up
while the game was going on. He just came back from
missing the last game due to a trampoline mishap over
the holiday weekend. He was nursing a neck and upper
back ailment. He showed up tonight walking across the
Hydros and I thought he was limping and lagging but he
said it was his funky flip-flops. He went into the game
late after Adrian came out and he never looked back for
the remainder of the match putting in a performance for
the ages. Kore ran his ass off and most of the time he
could be seen wherever the ball was. He covered the
entire pitch tonight and went in hard as usual. He got
under the Azzurri skin which he does better than anyone
(well, he rivals Swanny on a good night) and he
maintained composure and leadership. Korey made the
transition game between the mids and strikers smooth. He
closed the gaps and opened up new space sending in
numerous through balls and precision passes into his
strikers. In classic Brown bruising Korey took his
bangs and knocks all night long and like always, he
waits until he gets home to rest up his wounds. It was a
grand performance and I know one particular Grandmother
(Bev) that will be proud of this game's, "MOTM."
League Game
#10 @ Ajax, Sun Aug 05 07, Loss, 0-2
Antoine Paul

He did it
again as he became one of only two FC players to earn
the nod as MVP this 2007 campaign. Antoine has decided
to carry the team on his back as the stretch run
approaches and we are all better off for that final
flurry from our 1987 addition. And to think we still get
this kid for another year after this? Tonight Antoine
put in the full 90 minutes in the back line and I lost
count of how many times he saved the day. He covers the
backline as well as the best of them and still finds the
stamina and endurance to get up top for every throw-in
and set piece that surrounds the opponent's net. He
threw in some unbelievable throws giving the Ajax keeps
fits every time he launched one of his vintage releases.
Tonight, Antoine Paul was spectacular and to think he
just barely got back and got a call off to me running by
his shirt-tails from the colourful Caribbanna
extravaganza in T-Dot. Well if dancing, eating and
carrying on with Trinnies and Islanders is what's needed
for this performance, then dig right in to that jerk
chicken and dance all over the Hydros this coming
Tuesday. Twon was this game's, "MOTM."
Round Of 16
Cup Game @ Barrie, Sun July 29 07, Loss, 1-2
Jason Farrow

He's now
starting to look like the powerhouse all-round striker
threat we all knew he was. Don't get me wrong...Jason
has been solid all season long but for some very
welcomed reason for 3 consecutive games in a row he has
been leading the team up front banging and crashing with
the best of them. Tonight was no exception as Farrow ran
his ass off for the full 90 minutes giving his all and
coming back and checking back, pinching in whenever
needed. Jay worked the front lines supporting his mates
all over the attack zone. His turns are confusing
defenders and beating them almost every time now. His
quick acceleration from a dead start is unbelievable as
he can beat anyone in a foot race of late. He is
becoming a real threat to all opponents and if he
continues this frenzied pace I predict some much-needed
finish for our FC team. Farrow is on a mission and
his 100% work ethics can only be rewarded with some FC
goals. "Jason, did you hear what I just said?" Answer my
wishes with some much deserved markers in Ajax next
Sunday. Jason Farrow's fast and furious fashion styled
this striker the night's superstar earning him his first
FC "MOTM."
League Game
#9 vs Vaughan Azzurri, Tues July 24 07, Loss, 0-5
Antoine Paul

He's been
coming to play at the highest of levels for a while now.
He gets implemented almost anywhere on the pitch and
plays his heart out no matter what the circumstances
are. He had a difficult task again tonight having to
mange and monitor the league's top gazelle. Antoine
covered incredible ground all night long and his
exceptional stamina and endurance never kept him away
from his post or out of position. He moved up into the
midfield and did the middle of the pitch justice as
well. He jumps up front for his vintage specialized
throw-ins whenever we are in opponent's danger zone. He
continued his excellent throws tonight as his
quick-release gave Vaughan backs fits of confusion as
his throws came down into the edge of the box. Twon
played an awesome game of football tonight and it's a
damn shame it had to be in a losing cause as there was
nothing negative or narrow about his fine performance.
Antoine Paul was this game's, "MOTM."
League Game
#8 vs Toronto Supra, Sun July 22 07, Draw, 1-1
Daniel Frankel

I would be a
rich man if I could get a dime for every Frankel bump,
bang and bruise; especially over these last 3-4 games. I
have known Danny for quite some time now and at times, I
have taken his banging and pounding in the midfield for
granted. This kid takes a knock as well as any bigger
lad I have ever had. He does this game in and game out
and never says a word. He gets up and continues playing
the Frankel game we have all come to depend and rely on.
This evening on Darlington Day was no exception as Danny
went in against a rough and ready Supra side. Frankel
played the midfield like a magician in his element. He
weaved passes and distributed through balls and switches
finding FC lads on the end of everything. He controlled
the middle of the pitch and let nothing pass through his
lanes. He showcased several splendid bits of football
including the POTG. Danny decided to show up on this Day
and carry his lads on his back. After 90 minutes went
into the books everyone would agree with me that Franky
was indeed the talk of the town. I have to go on about
this kid because his humble and quiet ways will never
let out a praise or a peep about himself. He takes
everything in stride and never expects anything in
return which is why, on this special Darlington Day, I
can at least give him the nod as,"MOTM."
League Game
#7 vs East York, Tues July 17 07, Loss, 2-3
Ryan
Pope

It was the
"Pope" himself on this night that looked up to the skies
for some Holy Hydro intervention. Popey was awesome
tonight as he put in a head-turning performance that
deserved the full gambit of stars and ribbons. Rye was
phenomenal and fiery as he played the typical "Pope"
game busting out his bag of heavy artillery pounding all
those who dared enter the 18. Popey was hounded and
hassled all night long by a quick and precocious pride
of East York lions that ran down every ball that dared
enter the FC zone. Popey deserved a medal for the
constant barrage of activity and action, let alone the
90 minute East York pace. It was non-stop diagonal
triangles of 3-4 attackers that skilfully slipped
through the FC cracks, never letting up and forcing our
backs to run ragged. Popey lead that FC back-line
contingent and even found the odd moment in time to find
his strikers wandering around for the loose ball here
and there. He's been making the odd run up the flank of
late (and we have a highlight reel on DVD to prove it)
and tonight was no exception as he played his heart out
maintaining his always tough presence in the back line
as Darlington FC brute. It was this rough and ready Ryan
Pope performance that earned him his first 2007 "MOTM."
League Game
#6 @ Aurora Hearts, Thurs July 12 07, Win, 4-2
Devon Potter

He's been on
fire for quite some time now and on this night he could
have been seen all over the pitch, score card and
storyline. Potter had his prints and paws all over the
outcome of this match and he made sure he was noticed
when it was all said and done. He shoved his weight
around in the back line using his bulk and brawn
bullying the aggressive Aurora lads around. He cleaned
and swept up the garbage in front of Lee in classic
"Sweeper" form. He made several runs up the pitch
pinching in on every set piece and 18 yard threat
including a breath-taking header that turned out to be a
crucial insurance marker. He even found a place in the
referee's heart making a special note in the official's
handbook matching up the Potter name with the colour
yellow. Dev played a physical, clever game of footy in
Aurora carrying his team up and down the pitch for the
full 90 minutes achieving a massive 3 points on the road
moving up the tables and jumping over the host team
making it a huge 6 point game. Devon Potter is the first
FC lad in Provincials to earn two "MOTM" mentions
and why not on a special night that made Darlington
history rewarding our FC with their first-ever League
Match victory. The long time Darlington Potter name
lives on writing more Potter records in the history
books which is why he deservedly earned this game's, "MOTM."
League Game
#5 @ Hearts Azzurri, Sun, July 08 07, Loss, 1-2
Dan
Mittag

We
moved him into the middle
of the pitch a few games ago and he has been teamed up
with several different middy combinations and no matter
who we put with him, he answered the call and puts in a
steady performance every time. Last night in Toronto
"Crash" smashed and smothered all opponents that dared
enter the midfield. He played an aggressive game of
football and distributed the ball off to his mates with
precise passes and vision. Dan covered a lot of ground
last night as for some reason the middle of the pitch
seemed to open up and generously hand over plenty of
open space to roam and Mittag took exception making many
gallops across the freed up lanes. In classic "Crash"
form he banged and bruised any opponents that challenged
him as he earned his first-ever Darlington FC
Provincial's, "MOTM."
Cup Game #3
vs Erin Mills, Fri June 22 07, Win, 4-1
Tyler Swan

I enjoyed
watching a younger Swanny dangling opponents back in the
day and then pulling the trigger for Jim Potter's Rep
boys at the Hydros. Even as recent as last Uni season
for Queens, I would watch him strike like a man with a
mission. And then we would collect him after the school
campaign and put him back in the middle where his
attributes were most needed just like the season in
Regional in 2006. Well, even though we are still
relatively early in this season, games are mounting
behind us and lack of goals are certainly becoming a
worry. Herman and I have been discussing a few matters
revolving the up front situation and last night we
decided to go with one of our first hunches. It was
inserting the natural striker Swanny back up front
hoping it would pay dividends. Well, I will let you be
the judge of the end results. Darlington 4 vs Erin MiIls
1 with Swanny scoring the first and setting up the next
3. How can we possibly move him from that spot now?
Swanny came back and dropped in and out of the open
spaces sending numerous through balls in to his mates
creating goal after goal after goal. He had a generous
helping of shots at the Mills keeps as well. He played a
classic game of striker up front giving the Mills backs
trauma all night long. Swanny single-handedly carried
the lads on his back tonight and unselfishly directed
the team to a victory. This Swan Cup Game performance
has success and victory written all over it. It also has
our first win attached to it. It has 3 points and an
advancement into the next Cup Round. It has a triumphant
celebration all over it and it can only mean one more
thing as well, "MOTM."
League Game
#4 vs Cruz Azul Shooters, Tues June 19 07, Loss, 2-4
Devon Potter

It's always a
reassuring and welcomed feeling to glance over the
Darlington FC Provincial's website and see familiar
names at the top of the player stat tables but to see a
back four veteran sweeper there makes it that much more
special. And if you think that makes me feel honoured
and happy for the slender sweep, how about browsing over
the internet and scrolling over the OSL website and
finding one of my lads at the top of their League
Tables. Now that, makes me feel proud and privileged and
again, even more so when it's my hero back-man. What an
accomplished season this lad is having and he does it
very quietly tucked away in behind everyone. Well,
tucked away until he breaks on through to the other
side. Last night at our Hydros Devon was magnificent in
the losing cause. I was speaking with some prominent
scouts that were taking in the game last night and they
mentioned to me that it was exhilarating to see how my
big sweeper carried the team on his shoulders. I agreed.
Potter was extraordinary last night as he did his
regular watch on his line and knew the goal scoring was
at a premium from his peers this season so took it upon
himself to leap forward at every opportunity and the end
result......2 goals and numerous set pieces from the
lanky left footed veteran. It was a sound effort from
Potts and a great template for all FC lads to duplicate.
Devon Potter was last night's, "MOTM."
League Game
#3 vs Ajax Storm, Tues June 12 07, Loss, 0-1
Yannick Diamani

Herman
carefully unzipped my jacket pocket and delicately
placed the precious piece of tissue in to my pocket
closing up the evidence and locking it away until later
after the game when I remembered I had a body part on my
person. The game had ended and I reminded Yannick that
he had a tooth in my pocket and could he please
surgically remove it in a hurry as the very thought of
his mouth rejections in my pocket turned my stomach.
That in itself and a fat lip with over 10 take-downs
earned him the nod as trooper (or should I say,
"Tripper") on the night. It was a sound second half for
Diamani but a captivating first that would catapult his
performance into the "MOTM" books. It wasn't until I was
conversing with European Recruiter Mr. Nicholas some
hours later when his notes showed over 10 upsets via
Diamani take-downs. He was knocked down, battered,
beaten up and basically drawn-and-quartered and through
it all...kept on keeping on. Yannick played the
game of the season distributing the ball to his team
mates taking knocks and bangs along the way. He was in
the face of the Storm all night long giving them fits
and frustrations of anger and anguish every time Yanny
came near the football. It was this Diamani dazzling
that would earn him this game's, "MOTM."
League Game
#2 @ East York, Sun June 03 07, Loss, 0-2
Alonso Tello

This is my
first-time ever having the privilege of working with
Alonso as a footballer and his piercing personality and
surmounting skill level has earned my respect
catapulting his playing time in to generous portions due
to his contributions as an FC lad. Whenever I motion to
Alonso, within seconds he jumps to his feet and dons
that infamous "Wilson" look telling me he's ready for a
bash and a bout up front with Farrow and today was no
different. The heat and humidity played havoc from time
to time but never wavered Tello's performance. Alonso
showed true grit and determination getting in the faces
of the East York backs. He had several cracks including
a nail-biting near-miss that just missed the target
banging off the bar. This newest addition shows every
reason why his new found touch has a comforting old soul
sense which is why, on this day, he was "MOTM."
Cup Game #2 @
Vaughan Azzurri, Thurs May 31 07, Loss, 2-3
David Almeida

David played
a brilliant game of football in Vaughan on this night.
David manned his "W" position with precise expertise and
experience. On every occasion he pinched in as the extra
man at both ends of the pitch. He became the 5th
defender and the extra attacker on the transition game.
Almedia covered the full field for the full 90 as the
heat and humidity did not play havoc over our fit and
phenomenal favourite. A second period sensational strike
that handcuffed the Vaughan keeper punctuated a stellar
performance from Almeida. It was David's fitness and
stamina that would out weigh and out play all others on
this close and hazy night in Vaughan, registering
David's first, "MOTM."
Cup Game #1 @
Guelph Royals, Fri May 25 07, Draw, 0-0
Lee
Wesselius

He was
outstanding! Like most nights, I lose track of Lee's
list of arousing and exceptional saves, but tonight,
because our lads were kept at bay and off the score
sheet, Lee's every move was monitored and appreciated.
He kept our FC in the game after an opening fifteen
minute lapse from our lads and then did the same thing
in the final fifteen including a game-saver (which you
can read about in the POTG tab). This well-adjusted lad
just came through one of the worse weeks imaginable and
after seven days of trauma and mourning, our leader and
captain came out and displayed this performance earning
his team a massive point on the road for the Cup. It was
Lee's clean sheet and courageous outing that would earn
him this game's, "MOTM."
League Game #1 vs
Aurora Hearts, Tues May 22 07, Draw, 2-2
Rob Gurr

This Darlington die
hard has come back to us this season on fire. His
efforts and extra work he puts in at training and
sessions has carried over into the regular season
campaign as he lead by example tonight carrying the team
on his back. Robbie played in the back line tonight as
he was one of three that held down the final line
of defence in front of Lee. Gurr was faced with no less
than 2-3 Aurora gazelles that had lightning speed. Our sturdy defender ran every one of them down. Robbie
played the transition game to perfection always finding
a blue shirt after clearing. With all this said, Gurr
did not stop with his demonstrative defensive prowess as
he made several classic runs up field finding many of
his roaming attackers with accurate passes and crosses
including a magnificent helper that tied things up. It
was Gurr's energetic and excellent game that would earn
him this regular season's first honourable shout-out as
the "MOTM."
Friendly vs The Dutchmen, Wed
May 09 07, Win,
2-1
Tyler Swan

He picked up right where he
left off after walking all the hardware from the 2006
campaign, Swanny carried the FC again tonight as he
played a strong game manning the top of the "W." Swanny
scored the FC's first 2007 marker via a brilliant turn
and a lovely bit of finish catapulting his lads into a
1-0 lead. Tyler could have easily netted 2-3 more if not
for unlevelled playing surfaces that resembled more of a
battle zone than a football pitch. He dominated the
midfield and distributed the football throughout the
pitch sending many of his team mates away with glorious
opportunities. He took his share of bangs and knocks
from middle-aged boots and blunders but still managed to
shake it off and focus on the task at hand. It was
Swanny's excellent outing that made him this year's
first candidate for, "MOTM."
